CABINET COMMITTEE APPROVED 10% DEARNESS ALLOWANCE HIKE FOR CENTRAL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES AND PENSIONERS

The Union Cabinet today approved to increase in  Dearness Allowance by 10% to Central Government employees.

The rate of Dearness allowance shall be enhanced from the existing rate of 90% to 100%.

Revised rates effective from 1.1.2014.

Finance Ministry will publish detailed orders regarding this issue within this month.

India’s first post office savings bank ATM in Chennai

The country’s first Post Office Savings Bank ATM was inaugurated in Chennai on Thursday by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram as part of the government’s Rs. 4,909 crore IT modernisation scheme for the Department of Posts specified in the interim budget for 2014-15. 

After launching the ATM service at Thiyagaraya Nagar Head Post Office (HPO), Mr.Chidambaram said, “The IT modernisation scheme is aimed at making Department of Posts a technology-oriented one and today’s initiative is a step in that regard.” The IT modernisation scheme would cover 1.55 lakh post offices and would be implemented by next year, he added. 

Speaking about the newly launched ATM service at the HPO, Mr.Chidambaram said that while it will initially operate in a closed environment for about six months, and later change to ‘inter-operability,’ on the lines of bank ATMs, allowing customers to withdraw money from any ATM. 

About Department of Posts, Mr.Chidambaram said that while questions were being raised about its future, especially in the wake of dip in use of letters and postcards, it was adopting new strategies and was therefore on the path to growth. Still a large number of people believe that the Department of Posts is the best in courier and parcel delivery areas, he added. 

An official release said the T Nagar HPO ATM is the first in the country and “four more ATMs are ready for operations” in Delhi and Mumbai. 

“It has been proposed to install 1,000 ATMs across the country in 2014. Another 1,800 ATMs will be added in 2015,” it said. 

The release added that Rs. 700 crore has been earmarked for implementing Core Banking Solution (CBS) for Post office Savings Bank. As on date, 51 HPOs and 11 sub-post offices have “migrated” covering 64 lakh accounts. 

By March 31, 2014, a total of 700 more post offices will be covered and all 26,840 post offices will be functional under CBS in another two years, it said.

Country's first Post Office Savings Bank ATM opened at T Nagar HO on 27/2/2014

Country's First Post Office Savings Bank ATM  inaugurated by Shri P. Chidambaram, Hon'ble Union Finance Minister, Govt. of India on Thursday the 27th February 2014 at Thyagaraya Nagar Head Post Office, Shivagnanam Road, T'Nagar, Chennai,  Tamilnadu - 600017. 

In order to meet the requirements and needs of the I.T modernization project, Infosys Core banking Solution (CBS) will be implemented across India covering all the Post offices.

        Core Banking Solution (CBS) - FINACLE is networking all the Post offices which enable customers to operate their accounts and avail Account related services from any Post offices on CBS network regardless of where he/she maintains his/her account.

 

  The customer is no more the customer of a particular Post office. He becomes the Post office Savings Bank (POSB) customer. 

 

Thus CBS is a step towards enhancing customer convenience through “Anywhere and Anytime Banking”. As Finacle is integrated to all the banks in course of time, the customer can access any bank account through post office.

        Around Rs.700 crore is earmarked for this Project. Core Banking Solution(CBS) for Post office Savings Bank is being implemented throughout India. 

 

As on date, 57 Head Post offices and 11 Sub Post offices have migrated covering 64 lakh accounts.  By 31.03.2014, 700 more Post offices will be covered. All the 26,840 Post offices would be functional in CBS by 2016. About 2 billion US$ have also been migrated.

        As part of this, the Post office Savings Bank ATM at Thyagarayanagar HPO is being inaugurated on 27.02.2014 by Shri. P.Chidambaram, Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Govt. of India. This is the first ATM opened and dedicated for the nation. Four more ATMs are ready for operation. The ATMs were installed by Infosys.

When I visited Besant Nagar Post office in Chennai last week to send a letter by registered post, it was a pleasant surprise to see a flower decoration near the entrance, a rarity in government offices. 

 

The young counter personnel were good and caring. I saw a Citizen's Charter too specifying the average time for different transactions and except for one counter handling postal operations, the service was so prompt that customers were disposed off in half the time mentioned in the Charter. 

 

In SBI Branch, Besant Nagar, where I do not have any account but deposit rental cheques of my daughter, they called me back to inform me that the Account Number had a missing digit. None in the Branch recognizes me. 

 

 I wish all government offices learn to treat their customers with as much care as these two offices. There is still some hope that India will shine!
