Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala elected as Nepal’s PM

Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has been elected as Prime Minister of Nepal.

Mr Koirala was the only candidate to have filed his nomination yesterday and his victory was assured after the CPN-UML the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly decided to support his candidature after reaching an agreement with the Nepali Congress on power sharing. He is the fifth prime minister since the forming of the republic in 2008.

The UCPN (Maoist) the third largest party and its alliance against him however, have decided to extend outside support and play a role of a constructive opposition to the Nepali Congress led coalition in writing the constitution.

The newly elected Prime Minister Mr Koirala has said, the new government is committed to write the constitution within a year and taken on the other parties on board for framing the Constitution.
